These photos show floral arrangements designed and made by our students under the directions of our floral design instructors during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy
. The center photo shows Japanese Ikebana arrangement made in the style of "Nageire". Other two designs are European arrangements. There are various ways to earn flower arranging skills as mentioned below:
A. The method of self-taught: Learning from books, website information available on the internet, YouTube video etc with no advice from anybody.
B. Learning from better experienced friends
C. Joining a local community college and take lectures of floral designs
D. Finding a local floral arrangement instructor to take lessons
E. Joining seminars for a few hours or all day long
F. Joining a college that offers lessons of floral designs
G. Joining a floral design school to take a course of lessons
H. Taking private lessons from a well experienced instructor
Learning from books and websites available on the internet works out as far as they learn the theory, concept and idea of flower arranging. YouTube video is quite useful if it is used by well experienced people who are looking for a new concept, new design, hint or suggestions. If people with sufficient experience view YouTube video, they can understand it. However if viewers are not so well experienced in floral arranging, they sometimes cannot well digest the contents and it is quite difficult to do the same job. How about joining a local community college offering floral arrangement programs ? Again it works quite well as far as they learn the history of floral designs, name of flowers, theory, concept and idea of flower arranging. However when it comes to earning practical skills and the way of manipulating fresh flowers, students have a hard time only because one class has too many students, which makes it quite difficult for one instructor to take care of many students within a limited time. And also interactive communications between an instructor and students cannot be expected, which makes it difficult for a student to get timely advice and directions when they make a mistake (such as arranging flowers in a wrong way). The ideal environment for learning floral design is students can get a timely advice from an instructor and also they can raise questions in person at anytime they like.
Joining a short or one day seminar is also a good way. However in order to earn practical skills they should continue taking lessons for a certain period of time. In the Unites States, many people are satisfied with attending one day seminar and they do not continue learning. They can enjoy a seminar but it's a long way to earn a good skill.
The most ideal way is to take private lessons from a well experienced instructor. The biggest problem with this idea is it MAY be much more expensive than taking group lessons. The important factors for the ideal lessons are as follows:
(1) Instructor is well experienced
(2) Small group of lesson (the smaller the better)
(3) It should be a course with series of lessons
(4) Lesson fee is reasonable
(5) Learning environment where instructor can provide a timely instruction and advice to a student and student can raise questions to instructor in person at anytime he/she likes.
We understand quite well what should be done to students. As you know there is not a better way than a private lesson. However it is so expensive even if you find a good teacher. Most college lectures or lessons have too many students. What we can do is to compromise at a reasonable point, that is for us to offer semi private lesson limiting number of students to no more than 4 per class (typically 2 to 3 students per class/instructor) in order to implement hands on training of ONE ON ONE instructions. Due to limited number of students per class, our instructor can well take care of each student. If you are looking for a small floral design class offering quality lessons, why not join California Flower Art Academy
