These flower arrangements were made by our students under instructions of our floral design teachers during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy.
As far as our students learn floral designs strictly for enjoying as a hobby, we firmly believe that they can achieve their goal. However if their goal is to have their own floral shop by using their skill, story is a little bit different. In order to do floral business, they must satisfy following conditions:
1. Earning flower arranging skill:
As far as they learn floral designs by taking lessons from a reliable instructor, they
can earn reasonable skills. This is not a big deal.
2. Leasing or buying a floral shop:
As far as their position is lessee or buyer, they can find a floral shop and it is not so difficult to lease or buy it because there are many people who want to lease or sell the business.
3. Business license/seller's permit/resale license:
As far as they apply for these license/permit, they can obtain them from the authority. This is quite easy and no big deal.
4. Hiring employees (if necessary):
As far as the wage level and working conditions are reasonable, they can find
Once above conditions are satisfied they can start their floral business. Procuring merchandise (fresh flowers) is not difficult because their position is a buyer. When it comes to selling their merchandise, they must have a hard time. After making a lot of efforts, they MAY succeed in achieving a certain amount of sales. How is the outcome ? Namely did they make a net profit after subtracting operating expenses such as monthly rent (if shop is not their property), cost of buying merchandise, employee's wage, gasoline, water, electricity etc etc ?
Without any doubt, the purpose of doing business is to make money. Therefore even if they can successfully procure and sell merchandise, if they cannot make net profit, it does not make sense. This is a point. Generally speaking, it takes 3 years until they reach a break-even point. Suppose this is your business, do you think you can be patient for such a long period ? And yet, after 3 years have passed, there is no guarantee that your operation turns out break-even or profitable. Unless the owner of business is well experienced in doing business or business savvy, most people who run start-up business face difficult financial situation.
Due to above mentioned reason we sometimes feel a little bit hesitant to strongly recommend them to challenge doing floral business. If they make up their mind to do such business after fully understanding the above mentioned things, there should be no problem. We have no intention to discourage people who are ambitious to do new business.
owever if you are one of them who are planning to do floral business after earning floral design skill, we would like you to fully understand that there is a risk you have to run. We know there are many people who are successful to run a floral shop and making profit in their operation. From person to person, business experience is different. Their knowledge level about business is also different. The financial conditions surrounding each business owner is different. Therefore we should not make a stereo type comment, which we know quite well.
