Above floral arrangements (left and right one) were made by our students under the instructions of our floral design teachers during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy. The one in the center was made by our instructor at the time of a big home party when our graduate oversaw the total floral decoration for the party.
In the field of high-tech industries, the advancement and evolution of technologies is remarkable and even the most advanced technology today will become obsolete a few years later. The good example is consumer electronics goods such as audio, video and multi-media related goods. Take a cellular phone for instance, the one that was considered the most advanced type a few years ago is now a kind of old fashioned. Year by year a new product is introduced to the market.
How about a fashion and apparel industry ? Suppose many of young ladies wear most fashionable and trendy clothes that are considered quite modish this year. However what will happen next year or the year after next year ? The fashion is rapidly changing every year, which makes the clothes considered most fashionable and trendy will become old fashioned a couple of years later. This kind of history has been repeating itself for many years. That is why they say today's contemporary is tomorrow's vintage.
How about floral design industry ? It looks like the situation surrounding floral design industry is a little bit different. As flower arrangement has a long history not only in case of Ikebana arrangements but also European/American style designs. If it has a long history and well established nature of art, it usually does not change so easily.
On top of that, floral arrangement has nothing to do with advanced and high technologies that need to be quickly updated every single year.
Frankly speaking we have never heard that people say this design is hot this year or this arrangement is the latest trend. As far as we know the style of floral design or flower arranging does not change so rapidly. However we recognize that the style of floral arrangements has been gradually changing for the past 30 years. We can find under mentioned situations:
A. Japanese flower arrangements affected by European floral designs:
Since European style was introduced to Japan back in 1980's, so many people began to learn European floral arrangement. Especially young ladies preferred European design to Japanese traditional Ikebana. Due to the drastic decrease in the demand for Ikebana training, some of Ikebana artists started to learn European arrangement so they would be prepared for offering classes which satisfies new trend and new demand. This caused a kind of new trend in the floral design. Namely there appeared a new type of arrangement blending both Ikebana and European styles. And this type of new arrangement is often called "contemporary Ikebana arrangement". There is no knowing how this new style will evolve in the future.
B. American floral arrangements affected by Japanese Ikebana:
Since Ikebana arrangement became popular all over the world especially in the United States, the style of Ikebana arrangement became adopted in western style of floral design industry. This trend created a new type and new nature of arrangement. Again we can find the fact of blending both floral arts, Japanese Ikebana and western style of designs. And this type of new arrangement is also called "contemporary design". This new style of design MAY be evolving in the future.
As mentioned above, there was and there is some kind of change in floral art industry. However the speed of change itself is considerably slow compared with high-tech industry or fashion industry. In this sense The expression of "Today's contemporary is tomorrow's vintage" sounds a little bit too exaggerated in the case of floral design world. California Flower Art Academy
