When you hear the word of "flower arrangement" and "floral designs" what kind of flower decorations do you imagine ? Some people think about typical American style flower arrangement. Some MAY imagine Japanese traditional floral art called "Ikebana". Some MAY remember European floral designs they saw at the wedding party. Or some MAY think about contemporary flower arrangement they found at a flower show.
As mentioned in the above, the word of flower arrangement has very broad meaning and it is quite difficult to specify the definition of flower arrangement in a word. I have been engaged in teaching a variety of floral designs for the past more than 35 years not only in America but also in Japan. Therefore I believe I am in a better position to KNOW what FLOWER ARRANGEMENT means than most of ordinary people.
When I began to learn floral art, I started with Ikebana in Japan. After earning a decent skill of Ikebana and getting experiences of teaching Ikebana as a certified instructor, I began to learn European floral arrangement. This happened back in 1980's when European floral art was introduced to Japanese flower industry. After getting a certification of European flower arrangement instructor, I started teaching flower designs. Back in 1987 I relocated to California. Soon after that I established California Flower Art Academy. During a long period of time since I began to engage in floral art industry, I have been having various experiences.
Currently I teach a very broad range of floral art from Japanese Ikebana to European arrangements, traditional to modern designs, popular arrangements to contemporary ones, wedding to funeral decorations AND beginner to professional levels. What I can say for sure is that regardless of the type of floral arrangements, the basic skill and fundamental way for approaching to sophisticated designs is the same. As far as we respect this skill and the way of approach, we can do a good job to make a beautiful arrangement.
Quite frankly speaking, from student to student their taste and purpose of learning flower arrangements is different. In order to comply with a broad range of needs, we set up a VARIETY OF PROGRAMS
from which each student can make a favorite choice depending on their taste and requirement for learning floral art. Some students want to learn traditional designs and some would like to challenge custom designs that are not covered in our standard curriculum. Or some people are interested in contemporary designs. Above mentioned broad range of programs we offer certainly helps.
