We use the term of European (style) floral arrangement or American (style) floral arrangement. Also we use another term of Japanese style floral arrangement which primarily means Ikebana in order to avoid confusion or ambiguous expression. However some people use the term of Western style arrangement. This means European or American style arrangement. People who use this term often use Eastern style arrangement or Oriental arrangement which primarily means Japanese floral arrangement.
From the standpoint of Oriental people who live in the Far East, Europe is located in the West. On the other hand from the standpoint of European people, Orient is located in the Far East. This is why they call Western style or Eastern style (or Oriental style). This way of expression is used for life style as well such as clothing and cuisine etc.
When it comes to floral designs, we can find under mentioned big differences in Western style and Eastern style (hereinafter called Japanese style):
1. Symmetric and asymmetric designs:
While most of western style arrangement is made with symmetric designs, th majority of Japanese arrangement is made with asymmetric designs.
2. While the majority of Western arrangement use mass flowers, most Japanese arrangements use line flowers.
3. The majority of elements of Western style arrangements feature the beauty of flowers and petals. However Japanese arrangements often use curly elements such as curly willow and grapevines etc or greenery shaped in curly line to express the beauty of linear line.
4. While Western style arrangements use floral foams and regular vase, Japanese arrangements use Kenzan (frog pin:needlepoint holder) and Suiban (shallow type container).
Due to above mentioned difference, it MAY be a little bit more difficult for people who are not so skillful to make Japanese flower arrangements. However if a student is diligent and enthusiastic to earn skill of Ikebana arrangement, practice and training can solve this problem.
