Which do you prefer, short seminar or long program ?
These arrangements were designed and made by our students under the directions of our instructors during real lessons in the classroom of California Flower Art Academy. If we make comparison between students in Japan and students in the United States, we can find a big difference as stated below:
A. Japanese students:
Once they start learning floral designs, they usually continue for a long period of time. Therefore they usually take lessons per official course from the first beginning stage. They usually continue learning at least a couple of years.
B. American students:
Most of them take a short seminar such as one day seminar or introductory program. After completing such programs, small portion of students proceed to official course. In short the majority of people are satisfied with enjoying attending seminars.
In Japan, even if they have no intention of doing floral business, they learn for a long period of time and many of them master flower arranging once they start learning. In America, they "graduate" from learning floral designs only by learning at a seminar. Therefore there is a big difference in the United States between pleasure oriented people and business oriented people. As mentioned above, between Japan and USA, we find a big difference in culture.
The similar situation can be found among people who belong to corporations. In Japan, most people stay with the same company for a long period of time. In the United States, majority of people leave a company after working for a few (or several years) and join another company. This is another difference we can find between Japan and USA. In a sense, Japanese people are long term oriented and also they COULD be said "conservative". American people are short term oriented and they COULD be said "active" and "aggressive" in various kinds of sense.
Getting back to learning floral designs, it is obvious that in order to earn a high level of skills, it is necessary to get a training for a long period of time. The longer they learn, the high skill they can earn. If you are very serious in earning a high level of flower arranging skills or enthusiastic to master flower arrangements, it is recommended to learn at official courses. However as far as you just enjoy a nice experience of making floral designs, you don't have to sign up for an official course. One day seminar or introductory program is quite enough and we can understand many people join only short program(s).
