beautiful and majestic composition.
-- Wren, 12/30/09

"Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life."

~John Muir

Let any true man go into silence; strip himself of all pretence and selfishness, and sensuality, and sluggishness of soul; lift off thought after thought, passion after passion, till he reaches the inmost depth of all; remember how short a time and he was not here at all, how short a time again, and he will not be here; open his window and look upon the night, how still its breath, how solemn its march, how deep its perspective, how ancient its form of light; and think how little he knows except the perpetuity of God and the mysteriousness of life.

“Traveling is not just seeing the new; it is also leaving behind.
Not just opening doors; also closing them behind you, never to return.
But the place you have left forever is always there for you to see whenever you shut your eyes.”

For My Daughter

I wanted to bring her a chalice
or maybe a cup of love
or cool water I wanted to sit
beside her as she rested
after the long day I wanted to adjure
commend admonish saying don't
do that of course wonderful try
I wanted to help her grow old I wanted
to say last words the words famous
for final enlightenment I wanted
to say them now in case I am in
calm sleep when the last sleep strikes
or aged into disorder I wanted to
bring her a cup of cool water

I wanted to explain tiredness is
expected it is even appropriate
at the end of the day

The Invitation

"It doesn't interest me what you do for a living
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dreams
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life's betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal

and not betray your own soul.

If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty

even when it is not pretty
every day.

And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure

yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,

It doesn't interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.

I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
 to feed the children.

It doesn't interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.

I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
 with me
 and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom
 you have studied.

I want to know what sustains you
 from the inside
 when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
 with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments."

Great poem to go with the tranquil scene

"And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground at our feet, and learn to be at home."

"All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a woman speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows her. If a woman speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows her, like a shadow that never leaves her."

Recently, while attending an artists reception at Canvas Fine Arts in Boston's South End, I had the distinct pleasure to have met fine arts painter, Cheryl Dyment.

Cheryl is a wonderful, insightful evoking painter who was recently inducted into the National Association of Women Artists.

One of sixty-two other women artists from around the country, Cheryl was formally inducted into this organization in New York City.

In celebration of the event, Cheryl will be exhibiting her painting "Pond Life" at the N.A.W.A. Gallery at 80 Fifth Avenue in New York.

Cheryl's exhibit "The Importance of Floating and other Lessons" is currently showing at Gallery 1581 in Brookline, Massachusetts until 1-9-10.

My sincere congratulations to Cheryl on this most remarkable achievement.

I have posted a link to her website here and also on the "Exhibits" section of my website.

It's right there when you smile...
If we go back, for a while
Let me go back, for a while
To that magic time."

“Bitterness imprisons life; love releases it. Bitterness paralyzes life; love empowers it. Bitterness sours life; love sweetens it. Bitterness sickens life; love heals it. Bitterness blinds life; love anoints its eyes.”

It is with great pleasure to announce my photography being represented in the Austin and San Antonio markets by Terri Rosas Fine Arts.  Terri is well known for her interior design, mosaic collage and sculpture. It is with rapt admiration that I welcome the opportunity to exhibit deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country scene for the 2010 season and beyond. ~dlb
