I have had the honor of photographing Irina for several conceptual shoots including the award winning photograph, "Excess . . ." so when she asked me to photograph her Brown University Doctorate graduation (her 4th degree), I was honored! Originally from Belarus, Irina is the perfect example of how immigration makes America greater, improving the American economy, job market and general wellbeing. Congratulations Irina Gnedko! |

"I live on Earth at present, and I don’t know what I am. I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing—a noun. I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process— an integral function of the universe." ~R. Buckminster Fuller - I Seem To Be a Verb 1970

Being a visual artist with #BigNazo is often confusing to the observer. The moment is perhaps too unfamiliar or uncomfortable to process in this age of self absorption and Screen Time Syndrome. During a visit to the Big Nazo Lab, Hawktopus had no reservations getting on the back of my Harley for a cruise around downtown Providence during 5 o'clock rush hour. The resulting reactions from the public wavered from smiling/waving to ignoring/looking away. |

“We were promised sufferings. They were part of the program. We were even told, 'Blessed are they that mourn,' and I accept it. I've got nothing that I hadn't bargained for. Of course it is different when the thing happens to oneself, not to others, and in reality, not imagination.” ~C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed |

"Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place." ~Kurt Vonnegut

St.Brigid, also known as “Mary of the Gael”, is an abbess and patroness of Ireland. She is furthermore the founder of the first Irish monastery in County Kildare, Ireland. Born in Dundalk in 450 AD, St Brigid is accredited with first creating the unique cross which bears her name. This cross is normally hand created from rushes however occasionally straw is also used. The distinctive St. Brigid’s Cross design, made from woven rushes, is thought to keep evil, fire and hunger from the homes in which it is displayed, however the tale of its creation is somewhat confused, and there is not one definitive version. The tale as we know it is as follows.... There was an old pagan Chieftain who lay delirious on his deathbed in Kildare (some believe this was her father) and his servants summoned Brigid to his beside in the hope that the saintly woman may calm his restless spirit. Brigid is said to have sat by his bed, consoling and calming him and it is here that she picked up the rushes from the floor and began weaving them into the distinctive cross pattern. Whilst she weaved, she explained the meaning of the cross to the sick Chieftain and it is thought her calming words brought peace to his soul. He was so enamoured by her words that the old Chieftain requested he be baptized as a Christian just before his passing. Since that day, and for the centuries that followed, it has been customary on the eve of her Feast Day (1st February) for the Irish people to fashion a St. Brigid's Cross of straw or rushes and place it inside the house over the door. |

 | David, There is a very important grotto/cave honoring St.Brigid, in Co.Clare. north of La Hinch, on the coast. There is a tower not related to her within yards of this Grotto. Her Feast Day is Feb. 1, in Ireland the first day of spring and she is the patron saint of fertility. (land and otherwise) The cave is worth seeing, if only for its historical significance. If you get there, let me know if the the Boston Red Sox Baseball Cap is still there | -- Marjorie Lynch, 5/15/18

5/11/18“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power.
Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget… another world is not only possible, she is on her way.
On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing."

“Life, he says, doesn’t have to be so bad all the time. We don’t have to be anxious about everything. We can just be. We can get up, anticipate that the day will probably have a few good moments and a few bad ones, and then just deal with it. Take it all in and deal as best we can.”
