Daily Painting/Drawing: Rachael

5/31/19

Today's model was Rachel, channeling Twiggy.  She wore a mod sixties minidress (half black and half white) with tights and go-go boots.  This outfit was a lot of fun to draw, but on one study I substituted red for black.

Daily Painting: Turquoise Abstracts

5/30/19

Yesterday I did a pair of abstracts, based on the methods of Laura Horn, but with my own tweaks (e.g., instead of starting by covering the surface with my darkest dark, I left it white).    I wanted something upbeat and decorative, so used turquoise liquid acrylics and a warm orange watercolor stick.  These two colors worked nicely together.

Suicide Print Continued: Sam

5/29/19

Here are two more layers of the reduction print shown previously.  All that remains is to print the background in a dark color that will demarcate the boundaries of the figure, and then a lighter color to show the shirt.  The registration is imperfect but decent, considering how primitive my methods are.

Suicide Print: Sam

5/28/19

For the past few days, have been working on a block print, or, more accurately, a reduction print or "suicide" print.  I started with a simple portrait drawing, and analyzed it into about five different layers, starting with the lightest color and ending with the darkest.  I've made seven prints, and each time another color is printed on those seven sheets of paper, I go back to the block and cut away more.  This is a time-consuming process, but fun.

Daily Painting/Drawing

Yesterday's drawing class featured the wonderful model Nat.  She did two long poses.  The portrait pose was pretty straightforward, but it took me three tries to get the figure pose, and even this last one has some problems.

Collage

5/20/19

Years ago I did a series of charcoal drawings of couples for an illustration client.  I was going to toss the drawings, but decided instead to upcycle them into a collage.  The black background and sporadic colors on the figures were added in acrylics.

Daily Painting: Two Abstracts

5/20/19

After watching Laura Horn's excellent tutorial on painting an abstract series, I tried my hand at her method.  These two small abstracts are the result.  They need a little more work, but are close to complete.  In acrylics and ink on watercolor paper.

Daily Painting: Two new collages

5/18/19

The wonderful model Ira has inspired three collages.  There's something about the way his coloring and build combine with the medium of colored pencils on Kraft paper, which harmonizes with collage.  The wonderful model Rachael is also present in one of these.

Daily Painting/Drawing

Today I finally collaged this drawing of Ira into a background I had already prepared.  They seem to fit together very well.  Now I have his cut-off hand and leg to use elsewhere.

Daily Painting: More Cool Eggs

5/15/19

I discovered today that liquid acrylics and inks (India ink, acrylic ink) give a less blotchy, streaky appearance than plain tube acrylics.
