2 new works completed

Hide and Seek
Hopeful
I'm happy to announce the completion of two new works. The first, Hide & Seek, is a major work I have been working on for about 4 weeks. It is a 30 x 40 oil on canvas showing two young girls playing hide and seek with the older girl trying to play a quick prank on the younger sister by hiding behind the same tree that she is counting 8, 9, 10....ready or not!  This was a departure in technique from my usual smooth finish that I normally use in portraiture as I employed rather heavy impasto on the tree trunk to simulate the texture of bark. It allowed me the opportunity to experiment with Liquin Impasto gel (by Winsor & Newton) and I must say it works exactly as advertised. While I have used and will continue to try different brands and products I can honestly say that I have always been satisfied with Winsor and Newton paints and mediums and without a doubt the finest brushes I have ever used are their Series 7 Kolinsky Sable rounds.

The second work is actually a quick 6 hour study to try out some other new materials-a set of greyscale soft pastels that basically represent the 10 step Munsell scale. Being a bit new to pastels in general I decided to give these a try and as usual I reached for my favorite Wolff's Carbon pencil for better control of the darks and Generals white charcoal for the fine lights. Throw in a bit a graphite pencil for general sketch and outline of the finer details, stir, blend, smudge and simmer for 6 hours and there you have it.  I will probably do an oil portrait of this same image at a later date as the expression and pose are one of my favorites.

Til next time, enjoy the view and thanks for stopping by to visit.

Glenn
