In the Yucatan peninsula the rivers run underground and are only available through openings in the limestone bedrock. The Yucatan jungle above them is dry and dusty but the cenotes are verdant,wet, and a refuge from the dry, hot landscape above them. The cenote is seen as a door to another dimension. Many cultures have doors to other dimensions .
