Reference Material

Here are some suggestions for choosing great reference material:

If photos are to be taken specifically for the commission, please use natural light (no flash or artificial lighting) take the photographs near a window (but do not have the subject facing the window straight on), or outside on a cloudy but reasonably bright day.

Fill the camera lens with the subject and where the portrait is to be full body, also take close-ups of the face.

It is important that photos are as clear and detailed as possible. Take as many as you can so that you have lots to choose from.

Please send several photos of each subject if you can.

If you are selecting photos from your family album, the same suggestions apply.

If you would like a multiple subject portrait created from a number of different photos, ensure that the lighting in each photo for each of the subjects is similar.

Candid photos tend to work especially well with children, as they help to portray the character of the child more than set shots do.

If you are thinking about using a studio photo, you will need to have written permission from the photographer.

All photos will be returned with your finished portrait.
