In Cuba art and artists are heavily censored and watched. Thus their art usually tends to take on a subtle, subversive, and critical point of view of the country and its identity. This photo delivers 3 perspectives. In the foreground the flag submits a notion of puzzling national identity, slowly being unravelled, as seen through art, and questioning the Cuban future. The middle ground is the living civilian, sitting on the Malecon wall (as close to being away from his country legally), playing music towards his City of Havana, like a ballad in its poverty. In the background is the Citadel fortress built 300 years ago to fend off foreign invasion, piracy, and to uphold it's nationality. Past, present, and future in one. |
