We are blessed here in Illinois with rich diversity of plants in our natural areas, and by late summer they create a rich tapestry of leaves and flowers layered against each other. I wanted to capture that sense of being immersed in dense, jungle-like vegetation rather than isolating the butterfly in a stark portrait. I want the viewer to see the butterfly the way I do, going about its business where it lives. Blues and greens offer a calming background for the more energetic passages of yellowy greens to purples.
