Five
young maddens living on the small Polynesian island of Tahaa sacrifice floats
constructed of Anthurium blossoms to the goddess Laka on the first Friday of
May of each year. These young women hope for successful childbirth, lasting
beauty, everlasting love, and happiness. They present themselves naked to Laka
to symbolize to her their purity. They pray their prayer heard above the
shallow
surf.
