Near
dawn and a small skiff sails close to the rocky shore of a tiny volcanic
island. The stratified ash layers are tilted. A steep cliff is a fault
escarpment created from part of the island that slid into the ocean. Black rock
and grey pumice beaches are ominous and foreboding. In the distance the rugged
landscape is continuously uplifted. The "seas", Sunda Strait,
offshore from this part of the island are choppy and turbulent. The
lone mariner, Slamet Rahardjo, positions the sail to his tiny craft to capture
the maximum amount of wind as he sails away from the island towards Pulau
Krakatau. He is a native of Bandar Lampung City. Locals regard the four-island
cluster as cursed. It is bad luck to venture near any of the four island set,
but with nutrients added to these waters from the steady emergence from the
abys of Anak, the fishing is too good to ignore.
