Roger Shantz
Roger Martin Shantz 1944-2015

Roger was my friend, teacher and mentor, we shared many creative moments and adventures together, when he died in 2015 he left me his studio and it's contents. I want to share his work, oils, watercolours and drawings on this page.

He was born on January 11, 1944 in London, to a Polish father and an English mother.

During his first job, he learned gilding and framing at Vilmo Gibello in Marylbone and woodcarving with William Wheeler A.R.C.A. at London City and Guilds Art School.

During his military service, Hermann Siems taught him painting in Spandau, Berlin. After serving in His Majesty's Armed Forces, he worked at the Sir John School of Art in Whitechapel, London under the direction of Vivian Pitchforth RA.

His studies then led him to Oxford where he studied fine arts with Richard Naish MA (Ruskin Master), Geoffrey Rhoades, John Newberry and Percy Horton RA at the Ruskin School of Fine Arts and Drawing at Oxford University.

His true mentor was always the great Polish master Marian Kratochwil (1906-97). After a period dividing his time between Spain and London, from 1976 he based himself in a village in the Andalucian region of Spain. It’s landscape and that of southern France providing subjects with strong outlines and contrasting shadows and light became key themes. Showed at RA Summer Exhibition, RP and NEAC and various London galleries and was one of four artists in the Autumn Exhibition at Jerram Gallery, Salisbury, 1996.
