I do do commissioned charcoal portraits of newborns. I use the finest archival paper I can find--a paper that has been made by a French company since the 1700s. Starting in the late 80s, two days a week, for 12 years, I drew newborns at a local hospital. Sometimes I would draw 3, 4--even 8 babies in a day and I became so adept that I could pat a baby with one hand while drawing with the other! Now I am into the second generation and have drawn over 3,500 newborns! Unfortunately, I do not have the patience for that kind of 'drawing from life' experience any more--but I have learned to enjoy working from photographs. Using photos as my reference gives me extra time and allows me the opportunity to render more detail.
