Acrylics, 36 x 24" Photographer: Peggy Schaeffer/Edie Cohn
"What Does She See?" After a few years of not really wanting to paint (a new grand baby in the house? political turbulence?), I decided to do a dark project--unlike any of my other work.
I worked mainly from a photo that a friend of mine, Peggy Schaeffer, had lent me. It was of an elderly neighbor that Peggy had taken a photo of years earlier when she was in the Peace Corp in Yemen. The photo had always haunted me and I was never sure how to use it.
But this past summer I decided to use the image for a painting that portrayed a woman shaman--traveling the night skys as an anahinga. What could she see, what could she know, that I didn't?
