At the Diner

3/31/14

The Pastel Society of San Diego's 28th Annual Juried Show opens on Wednesday, April 2nd and runs through the 14th. The show is held in Gallery 21, Spanish Village, Balboa Park. This is by far the most difficult painting to date. Glass, ice, chrome, wood and plastic each have a challenge of their own. This piece is 14" X 18", in a 20" X 14" frame.

When we were in Albuquerque for the International Association of Pastel Societies' convention, we walked into the Standard Diner for lunch. The lighting was just right for a little still life on our table, so I pulled out my camera and took a few photos. I discovered the reflection of the Ketchup bottle on the knife, and angled the knife until I was happy with the direction of that reflection. While painting, I had to keep in mind the values and colors of that reflection so that it did not compete with the color and value of the condiment bottles.

The frosted water glass was the most enjoyable. After laying in the medium umber tone, I swiped one of my fingers over a Great American cool white pastel. With the pastel on my finger, I then gently rubbed several layers of the white in specific areas of the glass to achieve the appearance of frost.. The base of the glass was the area that picked up several of the colors in the bottles.
