Brownstone stoneware cracked surface sodium silicate vase. The cracking on the surface of this vase was done when sodium silicated impregnated porcelain slip (liquid clay) was painted on the wet clay surface and then the vase formed on the wheel using only one hand to expand and shape the vase from the inside. Only one hand can be used when doing this process to avoid smearing the outside of the vase, as would happen if two hands were used as in traditional pottery making, thus making this vase is much more challenging.
