Always watching . . .
Always watching . . .

Photographer: Steven Whitsett, 1998

When you are homeless--you're vulnerable. You're always watching for signs of aggression, always wondering--who can I trust? They watched me very, very carefully.

The drawing process, the finished portrait--usually dissolved those barriers. I'm not sure why, but it did.  Idon't think our talks could ever have been so candid if we had not shared that process.
