I paid everyone $5.00 to pose for me, $5.00 to let me interview them, plus I gave everyone a print of the finished drawing. (Many sent their pictures to their mothers.) In return, they agreed to be part of this project. That meant they had to sign a release form that gave me permission to use their images and their stories for educational purposes such as this traveling exhibit and a book that I'm working on about the project.
