The Artwork Of Doug Powell
Artist directory :: The Artwork Of Doug Powell This mosaic was created using nearly 7,000 recycled computer keys, individually dyed to bring out bold color and dimension. It’s a commissioned piece headed to a collector North of the border, Quebec, Canada. This work is inspired by the legendary artist Mel Bochner (1940–2025), whose vibrant use of language and typographic composition has long challenged the boundaries between word and image. While I don’t seek to imitate his work, I do aim to honor his influence and legacy by exploring text in my own medium. "Language is not transparent, we write not only to be understood, but also to be misunderstood” -Mel Bochner

About
The innovative artist Doug Powell creates the illusion of three-dimensional form through the use and arrangement of recycled, or up cycled, computer keyboard keys. Up cycling has a positive environmental impact due to the rescue and re-purposing of manufactured objects. The reuse of materials has been employed by artists throughout history from Amish quilters and American folk artists to Modern Masters, such as Picasso, Joseph Cornell, and Robert Rauschenberg, all of whom have reused materials or found objects to create new, more complex works of art.
