Vintage Drunkard's Path - circa 1930's

75" x 90" bed quilt.  Hand pieced by unknown maker and hand quilted by Barbara Dubovsky and Loretta Bell.  Completed in 2005.  Purchased the top from an antique dealer.  It dates circa 1930's.  Lavender on a white background.  The drunkard's path has been a popular quilt pattern since the late 19th century.  Legends of its origin abound.  "Another name for the Drunkard’s Path pattern is the Solomon’s Puzzle pattern. The origin of this pattern can be traced back to Ancient Egypt. Archaeologists have also discovered the familiar design on Roman artifacts. Quilters in the early American colonies knew this pattern under a variety of different names.

American oral tradition states that this quilt design was used along the Underground Railroad. It may have even been used to help slaves find their way to freedom. However, the use of quilts in the Underground Railroad is an oral tradition which is widely debated among quilt historians.

Other stories suggest that the ..... pattern first originated with the Women’s Temperance Movement in the early 20th Century."  https://blog.accuquilt.com/education/history-of-drunkards-path-quilt-patterns.
Whoever made this quilt had perfect hand stitching.  I added the borders.  (a new photo with better color will be added later).
