Daily Painting: Still Life with Pitcher

This still life is in pastel on plain, toothy charcoal/pastel paper in a pale beige.  What a struggle!  I had a very hard time getting any darks.  This was partly because I didn't have the deep navy blue required for the blue drape, but even apart from that, the plain, light paper showed through and didn't seem to hold a thick coating of pastel.  I can't wait for my next jar of pastel ground to arrive, so I can make more paper with the surface I prefer.
