The saint was martyred under the Roman emperor Diocletian. Her eyes were gouged out and a sword was driven through her throat. The palm leaf signifies martyrdom and her eyes are traditionally shown resting on a golden plate. Saint Lucy is honored in Scandinavia in an early spring festival in which young ladies wear a headdress of green leaves and candles.
