The Huachuca Mountains and other ranges of southeastern
Arizona are known as “Sky Islands” and are home to vegetation not found lower
in the parched valleys. The limestone mountains of the area where formed in an
ocean environment and uplifted during mountain building episodes. These
mountains include deep cave system chemically eroded by water and referred to
as Karst formations. These caves and caverns are home to many bat species that
emerge at night to forage and feed on the many species of Yucca that cover the
mountains.
