In the 'romantic' and 'archaic' tradition of being an artist there is an identification of the artist as a prophet. In this tradition there is a three part development of the person to that designation. The first part is the 'call' which can be subtle or dramatic. The second part is the training or 'purgation' of the former self - there is a lot of literature abut this stage. The third stage is when the artist now has become the prophet and announces his message to the world. This last stage is not the end though. Many artists who reach this stage, and many do not, then start to become celebrities rather than messengers. This is the temptation in the desert from St. Mathew's gospel. Most artists succumb to this and to the material rewards that go with it. They are no longer messengers and their work lacks 'honesty' but wallows in self-parody or sentimentality. Honesty has no material rewards.
