I have been interested in how people try to discern what they consider to be communication from a god, or how they obtain what they consider to be 'truth'. Every culture has had some type of ritual to do this, including modern ones. The nature of the sacrifice ( in this painting, a raven ) changes but the intention is the same. The raven is pictured as dead but glows as the message is channeled through its death.
