This painting is about how our over-consumption and reduction of everything to an object for our appetites is destroying the environment that sustains us - we are 'eating' ourselves to death. The female figure represents nature, the garbage can represents those parts of 'other' that are of no use to us but have been destroyed by our consumption of the parts of its whole that we ate -whether that be things or people.
