L Yvonne Ruiz - January 2010  (Updated April 2014)

As a painter, I follow Dali’s artistic purpose to “make visible, the invisible”. The two-dimensional medium of painting on canvas fools our eye, and I like to explore the way it does that. Using acrylic paints I enjoy creating images that look 3-dimensional. Sometimes I sneak in an image from another dimension or use flat objects to emphasis the medium of paint on canvas, a 2-dimensional feature. I often use Mexican themes. Dia de los Muertos spirits, Aztec symbols, religious symbols, hearts, cacti, deserts, mountains, clouds, volcanos, water, fire, lizards, corn, and native people are common images within my work.

In 1997 I became interested in the plight of the Tarahumaras living in the Sierras of Chihuahua, Mexico. Some of my works bring awareness to the ecological effects of logging on the native people living there. One of my pieces shows Ancient Natives dancing around a volcano to demonstrate the anger of the Ancient ones who feel we greedily rape the earth of its natural resources, affecting the lifestyle of their descendants -- the Tarahumaras and ourselves.

Although my painted works acknowledge my Mexican heritage and my cousins living in Mexico, I am a third-generation U.S. Citizen born in Pasadena, CA, where I have lived most of my life. I also lived in Boise, Idaho, for three years, and I have traveled these states: California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and New York. Mexico states I've traveled include Chihuahua, Mexico D.F., Oaxaca, and Yucatan. I've also been thru major cities in Peru, including Lima and Cuzco on my way to my all-time dream destination, Machu Pichu. Most recently (2018) I visited San Salvador and San Miguel in El Salvador.

Now retired, I supplement my income by creating and selling paintings, portraits, murals, and my bookcover art on selfpubbookcovers.com/yvonrz.

I have a BFA degree from UCLA, a certificate in Computer Graphics from Platt College, and a certificate in Pre-Press from PCC.
