This is about the psychological experience of the void. The void is a theme in spirituality that refers to the transcendence of the Other (god). It is an experience that today's religious cultures generally lack. It is also called the 'tremendum' and conveys the feeling of distance between creature and creator. In today's religious culture, too many people presume to 'speak' on behalf of 'god'-especially to lay burdens on other people. The people who do this, generally have not experienced the void. The void, as deep and somber as it is, also has a mocking aftertaste as it renders all of our plans inconsequential - no matter who we are...the latter being a major theme in Western Gothic art.
