Melissa Blue Fine Art

Artist directory :: Melissa Blue Fine Art

I create vibrant paintings that are inspired by the many years I spent as a habitat restoration volunteer. I love color, and the challenge of using design to portray the beautiful natural world that is so important to me.

Melissa Blue Fine Art
Melissa has devoted many years to honing her craft, capturing the beauty she finds in the natural world. Her work is informed by a degree in biology as well as many hours in the field, studying how plants and creatures form communities. She is particularly drawn to the connections she finds~plants to geology, insects to plants. "I always knew I was meant to be an artist, but when I started monitoring butterflies at Illinois Beach State Park, I knew I'd found my subject." ~Melissa

Landscapes Discover the landscapes of the upper midwest, rich with subtle beauty in every season.
Horse and Garden Although my primary focus is on the natural world, and seeking to highlight the unique beauty to be found where I live, I also love horses and gardens so once in awhile I will paint from these inspirations as well.

Commissions Occasionally I have agreed to do a commission for someone, if our visions are in sympathy with each other. Here you can see some of those projects.

All Lined Up
Ah, fall, with children lining up for the bus and blazing stars and sunflowers lining up in the prairie.

Pond Life
A painting that gazes into the still water of a pond to enjoy the plants growing there and the dragonfly that dances above.

Dunes with Sand Coreopsis
I started this painting quite some time ago, then with one thing and another, it got pushed aside. Finally I was ready to tackle it once again. Sections of the sky needed to be repainted, and I wanted to add a killdeer.

Black Oak Woodland
Featuring a landscape painting of the oak woodland at the North Unit of Illinois Beach State Park.

Abstract Field of Flowers
The end of summer is so sad to me, but my sadness is tempered by the beautiful colors out in nature this time of year. The umbels that have been white all summer have turned the color of Burgundy, while around them the yellow-green of Solidagos are ramping up, getting ready for their turn to bloom. For this painting I wanted to boil it all down to sweeps of color, so delicious to look at as they merge one into another.
