There are moments when we have epiphanies ( literally, ' an disclosure of something that was hidden'). At these times we feel that whatever has been 'revealed' to us is beyond doubting. The figure in the painting has no head because his consciousness is one with the revelation. The stark shadows and surreal landscape are part of the 'feelings that an epiphany experience generates in us. It is a mystical experience in religious terms, a 'peak experience' in humanistic psychology, an 'aesthetic experience' in the arts, and, less charitably, a 'psychotic episode' in psychiatry.
