Quand la ronce
barde la fleur…
Le fil de fer barbelé est
christique.
The genesis of the barbwire
finds its roots on the forehead of The Christ with the thorny crown. Albeit its
spiky nature, the Holy barbwire exhorts passion and abnegation. Descending
directly from the bramble, the prickly wire, with its multiple forms and
shapes, besieges Beirut. The Capital is under the claws of forbidden access to
its topography. Not so long ago, the barbwire was a vestige of the war. Today,
it is the prestige of a new war. The war of the unforeseen and the unpredicted.
Neatly implemented in the heart
of the rural architecture of Beirut, its twisted movement and its mortuary and
psycho-social presence confirms the image of a an perennial scar, of a chastity
belt for a united-national brothel
In spite of its repetitive and
menacing composition, the barbwire figures amid the urban objects that escort
our daily life. It is a pathological signal of the precarity of life. Its
presence, be it authentic, esthetic or political, takes part of our private and
public spaces and falls under the realm of the decorative objects of war. The
inter-relationship between the individual and his barb wired environment,
forges his social behavior vis-à-vis
himself and his surrounding milieu.
Through a metaphoric representation, equally enviable and
ironic, I bring to the fore the symbolic and aesthetic values of the barbwire,
shedding light on its surpassed social status and its sinister harmony within
the public and private spaces.
Primarily, my project will be a
combination of a video projection and essential materials such as wood, metal,
flowers, clay, and so forth.
