And so (while sleeping) I realized:

(Given that the volume of a pyramid is 1/3 base x height - demonstrated elsewhere)

The volume of an octahedron is the volume of two square based pyramids, each with a height of 1/2 the same square . . . and as 2 x 1/2 = 1, the volume will be 1/3 the volume of a cube based on the same square.

Q.E.D.?
