The horizontal face is based on a carving from the cross in the Temple of the Foliated Cross.  The vertical figure is based on an 8th c figurine of the young corn god now housed in the Met, New York.

	What a powerful painting - I find it very beautiful and at the same time very disturbing. The colours are superb but the mood is dark and fearful.
