Pastel paintings / Oceans, Water, Sunsets, Trees. etc. Pastel paintings / Oceans, Water, Sunsets, Trees. etc.

This Gallery depicts landscapes of all kinds both imagined and creations from memories.  Memories of a previously visited place.  It is somewhat humorous what can interest a landscape Artist.  Sunlight playing on the leaves of the trees .  Even various shades in the soil or rocks can inspire the Artist hand.  I try to capture objects inanimate and living through sunlight and shadow as well as reflections  They are obvious in my Artwork.  Moods like ocean beaches with footsteps treading in the sand.  I have created many landscapes to enhance inspirational feelings of all kinds.  Capturing things like sunsets, moving water, clouds, sunny skies are just some of the things that inspire my landscapes.

Celestial Earth Celestial Earth

Celestial Bodies
Earth

This Gallery includes paintings of the Celestial bodies in Pastel
Graphite pencil and Acrylic.  As I have mentioned many things about Astronomy fascinate me. This Earth gallery is about the surface of the Earth and its atmospheric surroundings as well as its place in the Solar System. This can include the moon, stars, the sun as well as the interplanetary Space. There seems to be so much to discover with the Earth and beyond ever since it was first discovered so long ago that the Earth is round and not flat. Also the mystery of the Universe lives on.   My paintings are created with Imagery and Artistry and may or may not depict scientific fact.

Animals Animals
Wildlife Landscapes and Portraits in Pastel, Acrylic and Graphite Pencil

I feel it's important to respect animals and wildlife.  I remember in High School Art class visiting and sketching animals at the zoo. It's interesting to me to see the various animals and birds that live in different parts of the world.  We learn about them on TV and in real life.  Animal and Wildlife survival is based on a continual search for food and habitat and the ability to mate.  Thus we learn as I did in a College course called "Human Ecology" about the Food chain and basic Animal survival.  The reality can be distasteful to us, as we watch and learn about the battle between predator and prey.  But as humans we share a planet with so many species and the beauty of it is in the many unique  characteristics of them, like the Tiger, Leopard, the Koala bear and the elephant. Animals and/or Wildlife that become extinct can disrupt the Ecosystem and cause detrimental changes to our planet.   It would be a sad day in our lives or our children's lives to see the last of our dwindling Tigers and Elephants.
As a child I liked seeing all the Animals and Wildlife at the zoo and in story books. They enrich our lives sometimes without even realizing it. Imagine not hearing a bird on a nice Spring day. For some of us our fascination with them diminishes as we grow up and pursue our lives.   I'm a believer in Zoos and Wildlife Sanctuaries that can provide a safe haven.  It helps us see and understand that we are a part of a planet with more than ourselves to think about.  As Humans I feel we have a responsibility for the Animals and Wildlife and for their survival.

Cry Wolf Cry Wolf
Pastels Acrylics
Wolve Portraits and landscapes

The Wolf, the Predecessor of the Domesticated Dog is feared and presumed fearless.  He is symbolic in the Literary sense.  The Wolf is an empowering Friend and Foe of Man.  His Iconic 'Howl" is a testament to his empowerment
and Supreme place in the Wilderness.  His biggest struggle is the Endangerment of his Existence. The legacy of the Wolf's existence as he has been the subject of heated Courtroom battles with Sheep Farmers and other Cattle Ranchers. The Wolf is symbolic in Poetry and Literature.  He is dramatized on our Television sets as a Wild animal to fear and that if Humans are bitten by a Wolf they will become one.  This Gallery in its description is titled "Cry Wolf" that is in reference to a Society that can become desensitized and the consequential apathy in response to something that happens repeatedly resulting in Complacency. This could lead to detrimental and even disastrous results when the real Imposter (the real Wolf)  suddenly appears. Another Cry this time for the Real Wolf.
The History of the Wolf is a long one and the Wolf being both Worshipped and feared  covers Centuries even Millenia and beyond of stories of the Wolf's interaction with Mankind.  They have lived with Man and through Man's protection of the Wolf (The Endangered Species Act  ESA ), they still exist in their struggle to survive.
Of the near 18,000  Wolves that exist in the US, 11,000 of them are in Alaska. Wolf and Wolf packs in the lower 48 are in only 7 States mostly in the Northern Half of the Country.  The ESA back in 1973 increased the number to 7,500 in the Contiguous US. I n the year 2022 the Wolf  decreased in number as reinstated by the ESA the Endangered Species Act. The States being in Alaska, Michigan, Oregon Montana, Idaho,  Wisconsin and the Yellow Stone Park area where the number of Wolves is less than 3,000
As for my Gallery there are many variations  of Wolves and subspecies . These are just some of the most acknowledged Wolves with the Red Wolf in jeopardy of extinction

Pastel on Black Paper Pastel on Black Paper
Black paper has been designated to its own Gallery. Colors appear differently on a black surface. Some colors stand out more boldly while other colors are barely visible. Since Color usage is strongly evident in my Artwork it gives my artwork a refreshing appearance. My choices of Subject matter using specific colors so as to bring about the best characteristics of the Black paper.

Felt Ink Pen exhibit Felt Ink Pen exhibit
Felt Ink Pens/miniature and small size Art

Felt Ink pens (Sharpies) are easy to travel around with and I started to make miniature, small pictures and designs. This medium got me away from my easel for awhile and is faster when applying color. Colors are vibrant and there are many techniques. It's different and requires a different approach.  Planning the color for highlights as well as placement of objects especially when overlapping them will help to acquire the desired result.  Once a color is applied its difficult to change it. A bit of layering over colors is not quite as effective as other mediums and may only oversaturate the paper because it is wet, so I have to plan ahead.  Although whiteout or an erasing pen might help, once the color is applied its difficult to change.  In my opinion sometimes these strokes of colors  can be worked into the picture and just let Art be Art.  Some Sharpie's colors are strong and vivid which makes this medium a little different and unique and it can effect the Style.

Designs Designs
I have tried to group my Artwork in this Gallery with the various ways I have used a Design. As I have discovered there are numerous ways to create a design. Designing sometimes has an organized composition or pattern.  Also in some of my Artwork there is a representational subject matter. The various ways can be represented  with geometric shapes,  landscapes,  Still lifes,  through Composition and pattern as well as Color. Color can be used to represent a Design like the Color wheel or a creative pattern that is part of the Design.

Birds Birds
Tropical, Herons, Geese and small Birds
Pastel and Acrylics

I decided to open up a gallery just for birds as part of my series of Wildlife artwork.  I observe them when in view where I have seen them close up such as BlueJays, Cardinals Sparrows and Crows. I have only seen an Owl once in the wild at a Wildlife center that had an injured wing.  Owls are ideal for Fall and Winter scenes that I love to paint.   Pastel is a great medium for painting feathers. It can create the soft feathery texture without the heaviness.  I have observed Flamingoes and other exotic birds at the zoo. The colorful tropical birds inspire  my creativity.  Without Zoos it would be almost impossible for me to see them.
Most of my landscapes include birds. A bird in flight seems to be the perfect final touch.

Creative Still life and Florals Creative Still life and Florals
I opened up this gallery to display my creative still life.  I began using Pastels to create Fruit bowls and fruit Still life.  This to me felt like a new phase in my artistic journey. However Color usage has been a long standing creative experience in my Art which is part of the reason for the colorful fruit.  In addition to the colors and shapes of the fruit, the sweetness and flavor adds to the senses.  This in turn lead to the idea of more complicated Still life with many objects and varying shapes with Composition in mind.  The Black and White designs were a bold addition to the color and Composition  that I feel enhances the Colors to create a stronger contrast. I also like the Designing aspect of this.
As you will notice there are other landscapes that steered me away from the previous idea but I feel that it is all part of the same Phase in my Art and I do like to steer away from ideas sometimes to refreshen my creativity.

Abstracts Abstracts
Expressions in Acrylics and Pastel

Colors can affect us in many ways.  Whether they are blended colors or bold and contrasting, they can affect moods and emotions.  When painting Abstracts certain colors on the color wheel can represent something to us since we use various colors in everyday life.   Sometimes certain colors can represent things in Nature such as the green grass, blue sky. or pink sand.  The 4 seasons also have representational colors.  However with my Abstracts,  even though colors are used they are not necessarily representing something  in Nature or emotions such as in the painting called "Doors," where the arched shapes are reprentational of the many beginnings and endings of relationships, opportunities in our lives.  Abstracting can be subjective and could mean something different to the viewer.   In the painting named "The Heart"  it consist of both of bold color as well as large strokes of paint to represent strong emotions. Also in the Pastel called " Peace of Mind," I used soft Pastel colors that did not convey strong emotions but instead a kind of a meditation where there were few cluttering thoughts and feelings depicted by using less color.  Since I feel that color can convey emotions, I used many different colors in the Pastel called "Reigning" to depict  Human emotions as part of the Human experience.
The painting in Acrylics called "Solar Illumination,"  was actually in my Celestial Earth Gallery before I moved it to this Gallery.  It is a different idea in that I was depicting the molecular Atmosphere in a Sunset where the Sun is furthest away at the end of the day.  In my reading of why Sunsets can be orange or even red, it was interesting to learn about the molecular division of the atmosphere and the Sun.  This was a different kind of Abstract for me.
You will see the 4 seasons represented in this website and not just in this gallery.  Although Spring was represented in the Abstract "Rejuvenation," I decided on this title due to the brushstrokes depicting new and budding growth. I have to mention that while I was painting strokes of color with Springtime in mind I realized that the strokes resembled flower buds that had not yet bloomed. This was not an actual and deliberate painting of the buds although it appears that way.  Because of this it became a more  meaningful Abstract to me.  Also in continuing the seasonal Abstracts, I depicted sprouting of leaves from the Spring Blossoms and painted bright yellow to represent the stronger sunlight reflecting on the the leaves.  This was in "Spring to Summer," where I created somewhat of a pattern especially with the yellow sunshine.
Fall is a favorite time for me. I like the Earthy tones of Color in Autumn which are representative of the Deciduous trees.  My idea involved the tree itself in Fall Colors with shapes of leaves that appear to be falling.  I blended the Colors into one another to represent the changing of the leaves as represented by the various species of trees.  The painting also represented the crisp blue Autumn sky.  Colors in Autumn seems to me to reflect the maturing colors of our lives in many ways.
Many of my Abstracts involve Nature in some way.   The paintings "Tropical Paradise,"  "Man and Nature,"  as well as "In the Wild," are reprentational of landscapes in the World.  In addition to the depicted Colors I tried to convey a sense of unruliness in the manner of disorganized lines in the Pastel called "In the Wild."  This was another Abstract that was very different and not my usual style.  However, the Pastel called "Man and Nature," was a representation of Man's existence and in the midst of the Wildlife and the Natural World.   Depicting and representing animals, birds, skyscrapers in shapes as a whole.   I hope at some time to attempt a larger painting in Acrylics.
Abstracting, as I have mentioned,  is a subjective Artform however,  many can relate to the visual aspects of the World.

Because I like to experiment with paint and try new ideas, this gallery reflects the many styles and techniques that I have ventured into. There's something about a new canvas and fresh paint that gets my creativity going.   Sometimes a style will depend on the subject matter and how I want to portray it.  But mostly I do not steer away from detail in my Artwork.
As part of my Artistic development with creativity, I experimented with various styles.  Early on I felt I had a skill and talent for detail but I wanted to be more creative. The "Tree in Sunset," and "Night Fall," were part of this concept that depicted the dispersion of sunlight. Depicting the sunlight is where I began with this technique.
It should be obvious that most of my Artwork is about Nature and Color and all the various subject matter that is involved in our Natural World. I feel the inspirational motivation to capture what I feel is the beauty of our World.  Creating Landscapes with my Artistry is what I enjoy most.

Horse Creations Horse Creations
This gallery depicts horses that I've created with Pastel  Acrylics.and
Graphite pencil.  Although I have not had formal instruction on horses, I've learned a few things when studying Horse Anatomy
There are horses in specific areas that run free but it seems they have evolved  into domesticated animals. There is so much History about Horses and so many variations.  When running they are so fast and powerful with their manes flying.  I have to admit I like to watch the horses run. I also have taken drives in rural areas to see them grazing.  There is something so serene about them. Horse Art can be a serious subject matter.  As part of my work with color I like to get creative with this subject matter and involve color for their form and sometimes use this in a  dramatic way.  Because there is so much form with a Horse's Anatomy it inspires me to find new ways to depict their shape and contour.  I use color variation as well as complimentary colors.  I feel that I can use my color ideas with the Horses Anatomy and be creative with it as well as involving the Lanscape.  Because of this my Gallery has grown due to my
 ideas.
I have also been working on Grayscale Artistry.  When working with Color I have used variations of tones as in the Colorwheel. In Grayscale
there are tones of Gray which will include Black and White and everything in between,  This can also be considered monochromatic which is variations of one color. In this case the one color is gray.  My Grayscale Horses are done in Pastel.   Variations in Color can be a little more complicated for me. I feel that Grayscale has been beneficial to my skill in depicting contouring.  Horses have many muscular and skeletal contours which make it an ideal subject matter.
I also feel it is appropriate to place Horses separately from the other Animals.

People Portraiture People Portraiture
Faces and figures in color and form
Pastel
Graphite penciling

Portraiture became inspiring to me when creating form with color.  It led me to creating faces rather than other subjects. I am also working with Graphite Pencil and I have a Gallery exclusively for Pencil.  Pencil as I have mentioned is the best medium to acquire detail in my Artwork however there are many other factors in Portraiture especially of well known faces and characters that I like to portray.  That is what my Portrait gallery is mostly about.  I discovered there are many things involved in Portraiture other than form and creating a likeness.   I have a small Portraiture Gallery of people created with Pastel and Pencil.  So I feel capturing a likeness as well as representing personality in a Portrait can be difficult and even complicated.    Not all my portraits are of Rock Stars and Song Writers but I have included NFL Stars as well as some of my own.   Also not all of my Portraits that I have created are on this website.

Wild Cats of the World Wild Cats of the World
This Gallery depicts Artworks exclusively of  Felines in the Wild and around the World. Many are declining in numbers due to loss of Habitat as well as Poaching.  There are only about 4000 or less Tigers in the Wild.  Not usually as much of a threat to Humans but nevertheless they are dangerous and also they are considerd Great hunters. The North American Cougar is the most numerous of Felines in the World. There are also many Subspecies of Wildcats. Their markings and characteristics vary among Subspecies. The Black Panther can be rare and rarely seen. Collectively there are still many Felines roaming the Earth but their loss of Habitat threatens their survival and possible extinction

Pencil Drawings Pencil Drawings
Drawing is and has been a fundamental skill in my development in Art.  As a child I began drawing from photos in magazines tv guides and album covers that included people and animals as well as objects.  I learned early on about details and shading.  Penciling, because of the nature of the medium is the best medium for me to acquire the detail and shading to create form.  When drawing I like to use a number of shading ranges or gradations. It is much more difficult for me to create a light than it is the shadow of an object.  There must be darker shades in order to create light. Sometimes I use the bare paper to represent the highlights but it requires a gradual shading to see the glow . This was the intended effect I was trying to acquire in "Glow of Light."

Owls Owls
This Owl Gallery depicts the various environments that Owls thrive in.  My favorite ideas when painting Owls is in a Fall and Winter landscape.  However, there are some Owls that live in warmer climates.  I have not actually observed an Owl in the wild but only on various media.  What I like about the Owls are their many feathers.  Owls have kind of a mystique that intrigues and inspires me.  Being more active at night they inspire my nighttime landscapes.  This allows me to get creative with the moon and stars as well as the snow.  Pastel is a good medium for me to create feathers since Owls have many shades of feathers.  It allows for a softer and feathery texture.  It is my favorite medium for Birds in general.  However, it is not the only medium I haved used for them.  Other mediums have their own characteristics and can allow for creativity.

Grayscale Artwork Grayscale Artwork
This is one of my latest Galleries where i am using Grayscale. Also considered Monochromatic, I am using various shades of gray.  This involves Black, Gray, and White. I started this Grayscale idea with Horses which is why this Gallery contains mostly Horse Portraits and Landscapes that I have created.  Also these Pastels can involve a Design Style.  This  Gallery has  expanded to other Subject matters.
Using Grayscale is somewhat returning to the Basic fundamentals of my early Art Education where I used Charcoal to create form. I am however using Pastel with shades of Gray and also Black and white.
When replacing Color with shades of Gray I keep in mind the lightest and darkest of Colors that I am replacing.

Geometric Shapes and Designs Geometric Shapes and Designs
This Gallery was recently created from my Design Gallery.  It specifically involves Geometric shapes some of which include Color as well as Grayscale Design.  Geometric shapes, as I have mentioned can actually have 3D effects.  That is what I like the most about it.  Color, however in addition to the Geometric shapes, can enhance the effect.

Autumn Focus Autumn Focus
I designated this Gallery to the Autumn Season.  It has always been a favorite time for me.  The cooler temperatures feel nice after a long hot summer. The sky is crisp and the Air seems fresher.  It has always been a time for anticipation and reflection.  As an Artist I am inspired by the Fall leaves and the changing of Colors.  Of course the variation of colors come from the various trees and plant life. There are other Paintings especially in my Animal and Wild life Galleries here on this Website that  reflect Falltime.  However, this Gallery contains mostly Pastels where the trees and Landscapes as well as reflections of the season are the main subject and focus.

Monochromatic Art featuring shades of Blue Monochromatic Art featuring shades of Blue
In my work with Color I use variations of dark and light color as represented on the colorwheel with palest of yellow to the deepest of purple to create form and shape to objects and subject matter. Monochromatic color can create the subject as well. I find it to be challenging to use variations and gradations of one Color.  I am using the Color Blue in this case and choose warm blues as well as cooler blues. The more variations and uses of the Color help to develop a more interesting Pastel when only using unicolor.  The blue eyes of a Snow Leopard or the deep blue night sky as well as day sky have been chosen for obvious reasons. A deep Ultramarine Blue is used in place of Black. Monochromatic Earth displays the Blue pond and sky as well as the bluish distance on the horizon. These are the ideas that motivated this series.
The Color Blue represents a multitude of subjects in the World. In my opinion it can also create various moods in that there can be something moody and somber. Other topics in Blue such as the Blue sky and Blue birds as well as Blue water can involve joyful and comforting emotions. Having the Blues can be sad but sometimes relishing in the moment there can be a comforting effect as well. Not all the Pastels in this Gallery involves a Blue Subject.

Handcrafted Jewelry Art Exhibit Handcrafted Jewelry Art Exhibit
As I have mentioned in other places on this website Jewelry Design for me is an outlet for designing and creativity. It involves placement of colors, shapes, and surface textures and various materials as well as bead sizes.  The beads can be placed in uniform or purposely mixed. I like working with many colors and shapes.  The final piece can be a contrast or a blending of shades.  I use quite a bit of natural wooden beads. I use the word natural to define a material formed by nature as opposed to an unfinished or unglazed wood.    Wooden beads seem to add a bit of nature that I like when placed next to a synthetic bead such as glass or other manmade materials.  As I have discovered there are many eye-catching effects created with glass such as pearling and marbling that I feel are nicely combined with the natural wooden beads. The materials are contrasting just as complimentary colors are. As I have mentioned I use materials and beads that are available to me and also fit into my budget.  Metal is mostly used as a spacer and an accent that gives the jewelry a finished and polished look.  I choose beads that will compliment my Designs because that is what is most important to me. They can be a bit intricate when using all the colors as well as all the surface textures and materials.  It has become an Artform for me but with using beads on wire rather than paint on canvas. I try to coordinate with Fashion but It is not always in mind as I feel I am creating Artwork.   My Jewelry is an Artistic expression and can represent many occasions.
I like to think that my jewelry is versatile and can be worn in many categoric occasions. This is of course a matter of individuality.   For now I do not sell my Jewelry Designs but that could change in the future.  Thank you for visiting my Jewelry Exhibit
